Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000 Emacs mappings
Thought this might be useful for people.  This will let you map the zoom and back/forward buttons. (define-key global-map (kbd "<C-wheel-up>") (lambda () (interactive) (text-scale-increase 1))) (define-key global-map (kbd "<C-wheel-down>") (lambda () ...

Much better discussion of... →
Much better breakdown of what’s going on, and what it means and doesn’t mean.  It is really a fantastic and amazing discovery, but it’s not something different from the hackneyed phrase “life as we know it.”  We just keep discovering that life is way cooler than we can know.

Arsenic replaces phosphorus in DNA of newly... →
It will be very interesting to see how much of the following paragraph is actually true: At their conference today, NASA scientist Felisa Wolfe Simon will announce that they have found a bacteria whose DNA is completely alien to what we know today. Instead of using phosphorus, the bacteria uses arsenic. All life on Earth is made of six components: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus...

TSA Success Story →
izs: By now, if you haven’t heard the outrage at the TSA’s “enhanced” pat-down procedures, then you don’t use the internet, and you’re not reading this blog. They grope children. They touch your junk. The procedures are ludicrously ineffective and harmful from a security point of view. And the…

Flagging
So, I’ve done NaNoWriMo four years in a row now, counting this year.  The first year, I made it by a day or two, if I remember correctly.  The second year I cleared 50K just after the 15th.  Last year I had hit 50K much earlier than that (I think it was the 10th). This year, I just stopped dead around the 8th day, and haven’t written a word since.  At least, not officially; I think...

Sharp Blue: Relativity, FTL and causality -... →
Been reading up on FTL space travel and causality issues, and found this link with some of the best diagrams around.  Of course, you still have to understand certain things that, as is evident from the comments the last seven (!) years, are not easily understood without either math + physics or faith in other mathematicians/physicists. This reminds me… people have the same problems with...

the ragbag: words wholly unrelated →
ragbag: pig & piggy bank wut!?! are you seated? are all of the power tools in your house—including your 14-inch robin gas, 6 horsepower, walk-behind concrete saw—safely powered off and unplugged? are your hands suitably restrained by soviet-era russian tumbcuffs? have your wits been comfortably…

Procrastination « You Are Not So Smart →
Quite an interesting look at why people procrastinate (although it starts from at least one premise I disbelieve).
